All children love cheesy snacks, especially cheese croquettes. What happens when we fry them on the frying pan, though? Can’t we have a healthier cheese croquette version, without too much dough, no fried, and with pure cheese for children? Of course, we can! I present to you the Babybel Original cheese croquettes, which feature the classic cheese with the red wax of our childhood, cooked in the air fryer or the oven, which are gluten-free, with oat flakes or sesame! The whole family will love them, so I’ll just tell you to come with me and see the recipe.
What we are going to need
- Mini Babybel Original. The Babybel cheese is made from pasteurized cow milk, from free-range cows, without additives, artificial aromas, or dyes, nor any flavour enhancers. It’s rich in calcium and makes an excellent combination with our egg muffins! You’ll need to cut them.
For the breading
- Egg. I prefer organic or free-range eggs.
- Oat flour. You can process oat flakes in a food processor if you don’t have any, or use another flour.
- Spices. Turmeric, sweet paprika, oregano, and dried basil. Mix them with the oat flour.
- Oat flakes or sesame. First, roll the Babybel cheeses through the flour with the spices, then dip them in the egg, and finally bread them with the ingredient of your choice. I tried only oat flakes as well as only sesame, and I usually double-bread it. The little hands preferred cheese croquettes with oat flakes, while I loved sesame; you can choose whichever you prefer.
Tips
- Bread them well, to ensure the breading sticks to the cheese, especially during cooking.
- The cooking time is quite short, just 10 minutes. Of course, that depends on your air fryer or oven, since temperature differs from appliance to appliance.
- Exactly because temperature differs from appliance to appliance, check your cheese croquettes often to see whether they’re ready or not.
- Choose a breading (sesame or oat flakes) that fits your tastes, or make both as we did. In any case, prefer double breading them, though you can also bread them once.
- Enjoy warm.
- I served them with rockets, cherry tomatoes, and a lightning-quick dip from tomato passata.
Air fryer or oven?
No matter which you use, they’ll be amazing! Baking time is the same in both, 10 minutes that is. If you choose to bake them in the oven, then line a medium baking sheet with parchment paper and spread your Babybel cheese croquettes there. Bake in an oven preheated to 180°C, set to fan.
How the little hands can help
- Do you know what’s the little hands’ favourite part? Opening the Babybel cheeses. To clarify that, if I opened them, we’d have problems! Please give them the cheeses for them to open and enjoy a few minutes of calm while they focus on that.
- Of course, they can help you with the breading, as well as place the cheese croquettes in the air fryer basket or the baking sheet. Ask them to count the Babybel croquettes while they’re doing it.

Dip in the sesame and turn over.
Return the cheese to the egg, repeating the process first in the egg and then in the sesame.
Move the breaded cheese to the parchment paper and continue with the rest.
Finally, place the breaded cheeses in the air fryer basket, ensuring they don’t touch each other.
Bake for about 10 minutes.
