Repeat after me: “They’re the easiest cheese crackers to make, and they’ll be loved by kids and adults!” They’re incredibly cheesy, tasty, crunchy, and so simple, with few ingredients. They’ll become your favorite quick snack, since they’re ready half an hour after you get the cravings for them. And during the time I’ve been writing this recipe, the little hands have opened the jar 5 times, and he’s constantly munching on the small and large cheese crackers.
What we are going to need
- Cheese. I used a local yellow cheese, but you can use any kind of cheese you might have at home. Cheddar is a great fit, but you’ll need more flour. In general, if you use softer cheeses, you’ll need to add a little more flour.
- Flour. I made these cheese crackers with spelt flour, since I consider it a healthier choice. Alternatively, you can use all-purpose flour.
- Eggs. We choose free-roam or organic eggs. A substitute for eggs is the flax “egg,” which essentially is 1 Tbsp. crushed flax with 2 Tbsp. water, but I haven’t tried it in this recipe.
- Poppy seeds. For additional nutrition, since poppy seeds add nutritional value to our cheese crackers, as well as a more playful touch.
- Spices. Thyme and oregano will give them a great smell and taste.
Tips and storage
- You can use grated cheddar, anthotyros, parmesan cheese, or any other cheese from goat or sheep milk you might have in the pantry. If your child is under 2 years old, check the cheese’s salt content.
- The dough can be made into breadsticks, too.
- Avoid making your cheese crackers too thin, because they’ll become tougher, and as such harder to be managed by the little hands.
- Temperature differs from oven to oven, so check on them often to avoid baking them for too long. If they’re cooked for more than necessary, they’ll become tougher and bitter.
- With the dosages given here, I made a baking sheet full of crackers and filled a one-kilogram jar.
- They can be stored in a glass jar for 4–5 days (if they survive that long).
- You can flatten the dough and cut out your crackers with a knife, or use cookie cutters like we did.
How the little hands can help
- Older kids can weigh the ingredients, and younger kids can be given the ingredients to add them.
- The little hands will love mixing the ingredients.
- However, what they’ll love even more is stretching the dough with a rolling pin and of course, choosing the cookie cutters.
