Baked French fries

With turmeric and a yogurt-and-peanut-butter dip

Yes, you can make French fries in the oven, and they’re delicious! I honestly don’t know what else to write about this favorite and incredibly easy to make recipe that’s not superfluous. If you really think that since you don’t cook fried stuff anymore, you’ll never eat homemade French fries again, then I’m here to disprove you. These baked French fries in the oven, which aren’t fried nor are they oven-roasted or baked potatoes, are so tasty, and they’re crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. You don’t need anything special to make them, you just open the oven and cook them, and after you serve them, they will vanish before you can say “potato!” You just need to follow the steps I outline below. And even though the little hands took some time to eat potatoes—he just didn’t reach for them—now, he won’t stop eating until the plate’s empty. What, you don’t believe me? Make them yourselves and you’ll see what I mean.

What we are going to need

  • Potatoes. 4 potatoes can make a full baking sheet. Clean them and wash them well before cutting them, and an important step is to dry them very well. You can slice them, but you can also cut them in sticks. Avoid cutting them in pieces that are too thick.
  • Olive oil. The quantity I mention might seem too little, but I guarantee that it’s just right. If you need to put more, then don’t add more than a tablespoon.
  • Spices. My favorite spices are sweet paprika and turmeric. Don’t skip them, they’re behind most of the taste.
  • Herbs. Dried oregano and thyme grant the potatoes incredible taste and smell. Prefer drying your own herbs if you can, the result is worth it.

For the dip (optional)

  • Yogurt. Use whatever yogurt you happen to have in your fridge.
  • Peanut butter. We really like peanut butter, but nut butters in general in dips and savory foods are incredible. Alternatively, we also use almond butter.
  • Sweet paprika.

Tips

  • The most important thing is to dry the potatoes very, very well. This makes all the difference in whether your baked French fries turn out well or not.
  • It’s also important to make sure the fries don’t cover each other.
  • You might slice the potatoes or cut them in sticks like normal French fries. Remember that their thickness affects cooking and whether or not they turn out as they should, crunchy outside and soft inside.
  • You can also use sweet potatoes. I sometimes use both, but the sweet potatoes don’t turn out as crunchy. The ideal cut for sweet potatoes in my opinion is the thin slices. Sweet potatoes also need 5 minutes less cooking.
  • If you have the time, you can clean the potatoes in the morning and let them soak in a large bowl with water so that they can release their starch. This will make them even more crunchy.
  • To cook them well, use the fan mode on your oven. Simple heat won’t have the same result.
  • Something else I’ve noticed is the importance of the quality of the parchment paper. In the past, I’ve used parchment papers that absorbed moisture right away, which didn’t help with cooking. The best result was achieved by a good parchment paper that didn’t absorb any moisture, as well as the oven liners I found on Amazon some time ago and I’ve been using for years. You’ll find the oven liners here, they’re dishwasher safe and a much more ecological and economical solution to buying parchment paper all the time.

How the little hands can help

  • Our little helpers can select and wash the potatoes.
  • They’ll certainly enjoy sprinkling the potatoes with spices. This step is fun for them, and it’s also important they get to know the spices, smell them, touch them, so that they’ll learn to tell them apart by color and smell.
  • Give them the ingredients to make the dip.
  • And, of course, they’ll help tidy up the kitchen afterwards.
